Get on Google Fast...Maybe Too Fast

Got on Google Too Fast

Just for kicks I searched for my site on Google the very first day after it had been activated. Imagine my delight in finding out that my website was already there! Not 24 hours had elapsed and my website was appearing on the first page!

I was still in the process of tweaking the right keywords and ensuring the pages were optimized. I really didn't expect any of the pages from my site to turn up on any search engine at that point.

Then I noticed that it wasn’t my front page that appeared up in the listings. I didn't think that particular page would show up for weeks, if at all.

I began to wonder why that particular page had cropped up. What was it that that page had that none of my other pages had? I couldn't figure it out. Then something occurred to me. It wasn’t what the page had that made it stand out; it was what it didn’t have.

The ap-happy web people aren't going to like this. The page that made it to the front of the Google line-up didn’t use CSS for styling. The Google front-runner didn’t use javascript. There are no images on the page.

Here comes the shock to the SEO experts. It has no back links from sites with high page ranks.

It is just a plain text-filled page. And therein lays the secret. Yes, optimized keywords are essential to reaching the audience who are looking for you, but simplicity of style in your web page is even more important if you want to get indexed by Google quickly. That plain page caught Google’s attention and as a result the rest of my site was appearing within another day or so.

And that is when I discovered the problem.
Even though I was still designing and redesigning the site, Google was still indexing the old pages. When I changed the urls to more "SEO-friendly" ones, Google was still pointing to the old pages with the dull names.

So heed this advice: Make sure you are absolutely 100% ready to be indexed in the search engines before you launch your website. Be ready, also, with forwarding pages to your new, fancy urls until the search engines can catch up with your progress.
