Writers and Admin Assistants: Get Paid What You Are Worth
There are some people on the internet singing the praises of outsourced writers and virtual assistants. These people are quick to say how much money their companies can save by hiring outsourced workers. Lists of tasks these non-company employees can do to help businesses grow include writing, back link building, website content, and social media management. They then proceed to tell others to offer writers and virtual assistants around 5 dollars an hour! They also expect to get 3 high quality articles for 2 hours work. I couldn’t believe it. Quality writing takes more time and thought. Don’t let these people sell you short.
As a writer or virtual assistant you should have some idea what your creativity is worth. At the very least look into what the minimum wages are in different countries. Ask where your potential client is located and let them know where you are. You may find this link useful.
Try not to be too desperate for money. You don’t have to feed these jackals with their own flesh. These business people know how much money your efforts will bring them. They should have calculated it before looking for workers. Perhaps they got some help here.
Below you will find excerpt from an ad that is circulating the internet in one form or another. Just remember that these people will try to low ball you and expect to pay you about $5 an hour. Be prepared with your own questions when you hear back from them. Point out to them that you know the current market value for the work they want done. Remind them that they get what they pay for. Here are quotes from the ad:
“Thank you very much for your interest in becoming our next web content writer and editor! Please read this description carefully before applying to ensure you meet all the requirements. If you don't, your application will be immediately rejected!”
“VERY Important: When submitting your proposal, please include the words "Roger Wilco" at the very top,”
“If you seem like a good fit, submit your proposal and we'll work from there. We can't wait to hear from you!”
They can’t wait to pay you a pittance so they can make oodles of profit! One $3 article (remember they want 3 articles in 2 hours) from you is going to generate a lot of income for them.
Insist on being paid what you are worth! However, you should also be ready for new opportunities. Maybe someone who offers you less than your current rate will be able to provide you with much needed publicity or another service as added value to your wage. You could always figure out their game and use it as your own business. Just don’t turn into a cheapskate like them.
